Web 2.0 Technologies
I see that you have your Master's in Information Systems. Did your curriculum emphasize computer systems more heavily than basic Library Science? And did that give you a head start in implementing Library 2.0? In addition to wiki's, what are some of the other Web 2.0 technologies you use at your library?

Yes, the Information Systems degree from Drexel is accredited by the American Library Association- and at the time (early 1990s) was one of the only degrees that emphasized computer/database/network systems. We still took regular library management, cataloging, and reference courses- but my focus was systems analysis and database design. I am sure that having confidence with computers and library systems gave me a head start in implementing Library 2.0.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to wikis the library has a facebook group page, twitter account, bubbleshare account, and a flickr account. We also just set up a summer reading blog to see if we can communicate with students over the summer about what they are reading (www.prhslibrary.wordpress.com).
I'm not really familiar with Bubbleshare yet, but I'm hearing a lot about Twitter, and I love flickr. I can see how there could be great educational potential there, not to mention just plain fun. It's great if you can encourage reading over the summer by giving students a discussion forum for their books. Is the library open during the summer, or does the whole school close?
