Plymouth uses quite an impressive variety of Web 2.0 tools already, but once you get Moodle up and running, are there any other technologies you would like to add to your library's repertoire?
And what do you envision may happen in the future? What do you think Web 3.0 might be like? Do you foresee a time when Internet communication will come to replace a physical library building and books?

Interesting batch of questions here!
ReplyDeleteWhen pbwiki changed their product this spring (and their name to pbworks)- I decided that we needed a new product to work with. They discontinued many of the features that I loved (invite keys, full-html editing, administrator level control over notifications, ... the list goes on!) We decided to go with Moodle, but we are still waiting on our Network people to install it on a new server... gah! Since then, we surveyed our students, faculty, administators, and parents and got some great feedback on what they would like to see from the library web page. So, we decided that our new PRHS Library web presence will be in the form of a WordPress blog. Wordpress is so customizable- it will look a lot like a web page- but mash-up all of our other 2.0 tools that we love to use: our Flickr (we no longer are forced to use Bubbleshare, as with pbwiki), our Twitter, and eventually our library database.
And that leads to the whole web 3.0...
(I'll finish this up later in the day... things are starting to pick up around here!)
Finally a chance to get back to you! Whew! The end of the school year always exhausts me with the frantic pace, the different tasks, and the pull to go work in the garden when I get home.
ReplyDeleteBut I've been thinking about your web 3.0 question all day. I think that while web 2.0 is the read/write web, I hope that web 3.0 will be the "all about me" web. I'm always looking for something that is more customizable that can integrate ALL of my information together. I'm hoping that 3.0 will solve this for me:
I think 3.0 will consist of a lot of exciting mash-ups: one place to enter a "status update" that will go out to all of your accounts or friends (facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc.).
I think 3.0 will mean Google Wave- combined with all of my other applications and social networking tools. One place for instant communication, collaboration, and information. I don't want to check my work email, and the library email, and my personal email, and then my personal facebook page, and my library facebook group, and my personal twitter, and our library twitter... it's exhausting! I want one (or maybe 1 personal & 1 professional) account somewhere!
Maybe I'm just talking about web 2.1 here, but I am looking for a change!
Finally, I do not foresee a time when the Internet will replace a library building. People still need a place to gather and socialize and find actual books! We are not going to stop producing & reading actual books.
